Alice Neel Self Portrait
Alice Neel Self Portrait

In regards to Elaine DeKooning and Helen Frankenthaler….

What resonated with you? What did you not care for or dislike?

I love the way DeKooning did such big work. I love her portraiture of men.

I love Frankenthaler’s bigness! The painting  of the cave was awesome! I like the way it is a painting inspired by the cave and it looks like it. The big bold shapes are so full but almost light at the same time.

What are your overall thoughts?

I need to research more about these women. I was really inspired by them.

In regards to Susan Rothenberg and Alice Neel….

What resonated with you?

Rothenberg talked about her sweet dog and I liked that. I like how she couldn’t get the arms right. I like how it was okay to move them and do over. I loved her studio.

I really liked Neel. But I think I liked her because of her style of art. It was very real unlike the others. I have always been impressed with trying to make something look real. I was looking at her website and I love the way they have the paintings grouped. You can really see her progress.

What did you not care for or dislike?

I am starting to feel that a painting shouldn’t be real. If you want real go take a photograph. I also am starting to think that the more real it looks the more left brain the action of paintings become and I am not sure how I feel about it.

What are your overall thoughts?

I really liked these two artist and I need to study more about Women in Art on my own. I have always been obsesed with Georgia O’Keefe but there are more out there I need to experience.

In regards to Joan Mitchell….

What resonated with you?

So simple which was so refreshing. No thoughts just simple and real. It was very refreshing. Everybody wants to put feeling in everything – it is sooooo overrated! – Ha! but here I am writing a blog about how feelings changed my life.

What did you not care for or dislike?

I didn’t like the way she was so blunt but at the same time I think I liked that also.

Who would you like to invite over this week?

If I had to choose one of them I think it might be Alice Neel or Susan Rothenberg.
